Letters from the Pets

Prior to the sensational duo that is Mia and Bailey, there was Toby and Turtle. Toby was the first corgi; he passed away a few years ago following a plucky battle with cancer. Turtle, as you may have already guessed, was a cat. Between 2011 and 2014, when our child was young, Toby and Turtle sometimes wrote short letters to our child, about their day or other Things of Import that had happened while she was at school or other activities. These letters have recently been unearthed from the great recesses of our child’s room, and so we have decided to share them with you. We hope that you enjoy them!

October 24, 2011

Hello, it’s Turtle. Yesterday, Mommy took a nap because she was sick. I was taking a nap with her and licking her face. She did not like that and kicked me out. I do not know why she did that. If I were sick, I would like to have someone licking my face. It would make me feel better and help me to fall asleep.

Hi, it’s Toby. Last night Mommy dropped a cough drop on the floor and I tried to eat it. It tasted very strange. I did not like the paper on the outside, because it kept sticking to my tongue. The inside was better because it was crunchy, but I still did not like the taste. I thought it would taste nice, like candy. But it did not. Why do people eat those things?

Hello, it’s Turtle. Would you like to know what Toby does all day when no one is home? He sleeps on the couch. All day. And sometimes he barks at me.

Hi, it’s Toby. I do not sleep all day. Turtle sleeps all day. I have to bark at her to wake her up. I have Important Things to do, like walking around and making sure everything in the house is safe. Sometimes I may take a short nap on the couch, but I do not sleep ALL day.

Hi, it’s Toby. When is Turtle going to get a bath? People are always giving me baths, but I don’t see her getting them. And she is always getting into things and making messes, even more than I am. I don’t think that’s fair, do you?

Hello, it’s Turtle. Someone needs to remind Toby that I spend hours a day washing myself. Does he do that? No, I don’t think so. Also, today I tried to ride the treadmill while Mommy was on it. I thought it was a good idea at first. But then it started moving. Then it was not fun anymore. I do not like the treadmill when it is moving. And I do not think that it was very nice of Mommy to laugh at me when I jumped off.

Hello, its Turtle. Can you guess what that dog did? He made me eat a leaf! Well, I did not actually eat it. But I was minding my own business, and he told me that there was something good to eat in the kitchen. So I went in there and started munching and it turns out I was munching on a leaf! I do not that that is funny.

Hi, it’s Toby. I did no such thing. It’s not my fault that Turtle tried to eat a leaf. I tried to tell her. I came inside and sniffed it, because I could tell that it did not belong on the kitchen floor. I could tell right away that it was Not Food. I even told Turtle, “This is NOT good to eat.” Is if my fault if her hearing is not as good as mine? No, it is her own fault that she tried to eat a leaf.

Hello, it’s Toby. Did you know that I have to go to Grandma and Grandpa’s house next week? I will have to put up with their crazy puppy all week! She had better be good. Do you think that she will?

Hi, it’s Turtle. How is gymnastics? I wish that I could be in gymnastics. I bet that I would be very good at it. Cats are very good at climbing and jumping and doing flips. I think it would be a lot of fun. There should be cat gymnastics. Would you watch it?

Hello, it’s Turtle. There is a whole playground inside the house now! All the stuff in the back room is now all over the house! It is so fun. I can hide in it and climb on it. Only I get yelled at when I do these things, so I have to be sneaky about it. I do not see why I get yelled at. If those things are going to be there, I think I should get to play with them, don’t you?

Hi, it’s Toby. I got a bath today. I did not like the bath part, but I liked being soft and cool. After my bath I sat in front of a fan and took a nice, long nap. Sometimes I think it would be nice to do that every day. But then I would miss out on doing other things, like chasing Turtle around the house and barking at squirrels outside. And those are fun and important things to do.

Hi, it’s Toby. A few days ago I got my nails cut. I do not like that. Except when I get a biscuit after I am done. At least I did not get a bath. Right now I am nice and stinky, just how I like to be. I hope I get to stay that way for the rest of the year.

Hello, it’s Turtle. I think that someone should give that stinky dog a bath. I wash myself every day. He should not be so stinky and dirty. I can’t believe that people would want to snuggle with such a dirty dog when they can pet a nice clean, soft cat like me. Would you rather pet a clean, soft cat or a stinky, dirty dog?

Hello, it’s Turtle. Today, Mommy took me to the vet I did not like driving in the car and pooped in the crate on the way there. I was very good at the vet, and every one said I was cute and wanted to pet me. I was very good when they looked at my eyes and my ears and my teeth. I was also very good when they gave me my shot. I don’t know why Toby makes such a fuss about getting shots. If you act like a good kitty, everyone likes you and wants to pet you.

Hi, it’s Toby. I’m glad that I did not have to go to the vet today. I do not like getting shots or having people look in my ears or teeth or eyes. Turtle had to get a bath when she got home. That was funny. She didn’t like it and shook a lot when she got out. I was also glad that Turtle had to get a bath and I didn’t.

Hi, it’s Toby. We have had 3 thunderstorms since last night. I do not like thunderstorms. And no one will let me jump into bed and snuggle with them until the storm is over. Maybe I will get on the couch and snuggle with your unicorn pillow pet.

Hello, it’s Turtle. I want to say that, if Toby gets to snuggle with the unicorn pillow pet, I should also get to snuggle with it. Also, I found the lid to a chapstick. It’s very fun to play with. Much more fun than puzzle pieces; they are not nearly as tasty. Not that I was tasting them or anything. I am a good cat. Maybe we should get 100 pillow pets and make a bed for me out of them. That would be so soft. I might even share it with you if you ask nicely. Do you think 100 pillow pets would be enough?

Hi, it’s Toby. Today it was very, very hot outside. I wanted to be outside (I like being outside), but it was too hot. Inside it was cool, so I asked to go inside. But after I was inside, I wanted to go back outside. I wanted to be inside AND outside at the same time. Has that ever happened to you? Maybe that is why people like camping.

Hello, it’s Turtle. Today I decided to try some new things. I tried to help with a puzzle, but got yelled at for being on top of the coffee table. I tried to plant some seeds, but got in trouble for getting dirt everywhere. I also tried riding on the treadmill with Poppy, but got put on the floor instead. I guess I will have to find some other things to do. Do you have any ideas?

Hello, it’s Turtle. I hope that you are feeling better. I wish that I could sleep in your room and pounce on your feet all night long. Or play with your legos while you sleep. I promise that I would not run off and hide all of them. Toby has been nice and let me eat some of his food to let me know that he cares that I am sad about you being sick. Sometimes being sad makes me eat a lot. But Toby also chases me around so that I do not get too fat from eating all the food.

Hi, it’s Toby. I’m glad that you brushed me this week after you were feeling better. It felt so good to get rid of all my itchy fur. I hope that your throat and ear keep feeling better. I will give you some of my dog food or toys if you want (they make Turtle feel better when I share with her).

Hello, it’s Turtle. The sheets on your bed have been changed now, and your bedspread washed. I went in and tried out the bed for you. It smells nice and is very comfy. I also took a lego out of your room and ran off with it. I left it in the house somewhere for you to find.

Hi, it’s Toby. I do not think it’s fair that Turtle gets to be on your bed and I am stuck on the floor. I want to try out the new sheets too. Maybe when you are back you can let me sleep on the bed with you and the stuffed animals.

Hello, it’s Turtle. It was very hot today, so I hung out in the basement where it was nice and cool. I also found some neat things to play with down there. There was some string and a cool piece of paper and fuzz. It was awesome. And Toby did not eat any of my toys.

Hi, it’s Toby. Today for dinner Poppy picked some squash. The goats got all the end pieces. All I got was dog food. There was not even a chewie for me. Turtle didn’t bring anything edible up from the basement either. When you get back, you should give me a chewie or a dog biscuit.

Hi, it’s Toby. I had a fun time camping! Next time, I think that you should let me sleep in your bed. Or maybe you could bring me a tent to sleep in. Or you could take me fishing with you. I bet I would be very good at fishing. I might sing and howl at the fish to get them to come out.

Hello, it’s Turtle. I am sad that no one took me camping or fishing. I bet that cats (like me) are very good at fishing. I could catch all the fish in the pond. But I do not like to get wet, so that might be a problem. Maybe I will not like fishing. I could just play with the worms. That might be a lot of fun. I think I would like that. Maybe you could find me some.

July 13, 2011

Hi, it’s Turtle! Toby was a BAD DOG today. He came inside and chased me from the kitchen to the living room. I was able to sneak behind the couch to the exercise room, but then he found me and chased me to the back room. I got up on the bed so that he could not get me and stayed there until he left. After a few minutes I came back out and went behind the couch again, very quietly. But that sneaky dog heard me anyway, and chased me into the kitchen. What else could I do, but get onto the table to get away from him? And then I got yelled at! It’s not fair.

Hello, it’s Toby! Today was very fun! Turtle played hide-and-seek with me. The only part that was not fun was when she cheated and jumped on the bed where I could not reach her. Also when she jumped on the kitchen table. But then she got yelled at. But that’s what happens when you cheat.

Hi, it’s Turtle. Toby and I are friends again. He said he was sorry for trying to eat my toy. He thought it was food. Dogs always think everything is food. But he said I could eat some of his food to make up for it. So I did. And then I tried to go outside, so I could chase the birds. No one seems to think that there are too many birds here but me. Also, no one let me outside. Maybe when you get back, you can let me out?

Hello! It’s Toby. Poppy mowed the grass in the goat pasture today, so I had to watch and make sure that none of the goats escaped. I did a good job, because none of the goats got out. But all that guarding made me really hungry. I hope it’s almost time for dinner. What did you eat today?

Hello! This is Toby. I got a new brush! It takes all my itchy fur out. I can’t wait until you brush me with it. I will lay nice and quiet in the grass and take a nap and all my itchy fur will pile up on the grass next to me. There are lots of little piles of my fur in the grass right now.

Hi, it’s Turtle. Today I got a neat toy – a foil ball. I was running around the kitchen, playing with it. It was lots of fun. A few times I kicked my ball down the basement steps and then carried it back up in my teeth. And then somebody let that dog inside, and he tried to EAT my toy. So they threw it in the trash. And then I got yelled at for putting my face in the trash and trying to get it back. I think that Toby should apologize, don’t you?

Hi, this is Turtle. There is a lightning bug in the bathroom. Actually, it is in the shower. It is very exciting! Well, it would be, if anyone would let me in the bathtub so that I could catch it. But every time I get into the tub someone takes me out. I do not think that is very fair.

Hello! This is Toby. It is very hot and my fur is very itchy. I roll around on the floor and try to scratch, but that makes Poppy very upset. So then I roll around outside. I wish you were here and could scratch me.

About Bailey

Mia says that I must formally do an introduction post. Unless you have haplessly stumbled onto our blog for the first time, then you already know that my name is Bailey. If you are a first-time reader, hello and welcome! I am a 9-year-old (approximate) Pembroke Welsh Corgi; my current family adopted me in 2012. The rescue organization from which I came had little background information on me, and since it isn’t particularly pleasant information, we’ll leave it in the past.

My new (current) home was quite a shock to me at first. I had never been an inside dog before, and there was a steep learning curve. This, coupled with my general anxiety, made for a rough beginning. Luckily for me, there was another corgi living there who provided guidance and wisdom: Toby, the First Corgi. He taught me about eating food off the floor, sleeping on the couch, herding the goats, and playing with the cat. Toby was a very good friend.

Mommy was already his person, and the child in the home seemed like she could use a nice snuggly dog to love her specially. I was right about that. My child and I have a special bond and I love it. She shares her clothes with me, and takes me for walks, just the two of us. I get to sleep in her bed, or in a bed she makes for me out of pillows and stuffed animals. When she has yummy food she will give me some (I especially like beef jerky, and she does too!). I am glad every day for my child.

A few years ago Toby got cancer, and after a year of treatments, passed away. I was super sad and didn’t know what to do without one of my best friends around. Then my people brought home the fuzzy ball of insanity that is Mia. I have had my paws full ever since.
