Letters from the Pets
Prior to the sensational duo that is Mia and Bailey, there was Toby and Turtle. Toby was the first corgi; he passed away a few years ago following a plucky battle with cancer. Turtle, as you may have already guessed, was a cat. Between 2011 and 2014, when our child was young, Toby and Turtle sometimes wrote short letters to our child, about their day or other Things of Import that had happened while she was at school or other activities. These letters have recently been unearthed from the great recesses of our child’s room, and so we have decided to share them with you. We hope that you enjoy them!

Hello, it’s Toby. Did you know
that I have to go to Grandma and Grandpa’s house next week? I will have to put
up with their crazy puppy all week! She had better be good. Do you think that
she will?
Hi, it’s Turtle. How is gymnastics? I wish that I could be in gymnastics. I bet that I would be very good at it. Cats are very good at climbing and jumping and doing flips. I think it would be a lot of fun. There should be cat gymnastics. Would you watch it?

Hello, it’s Turtle. There is a whole playground inside the
house now! All the stuff in the back room is now all over the house! It is so
fun. I can hide in it and climb on it. Only I get yelled at when I do these
things, so I have to be sneaky about it. I do not see why I get yelled at. If
those things are going to be there, I think I should get to play with them,
don’t you?
Hi, it’s Toby. I got a bath today. I did not like the bath
part, but I liked being soft and cool. After my bath I sat in front of a fan
and took a nice, long nap. Sometimes I think it would be nice to do that every
day. But then I would miss out on doing other things, like chasing Turtle
around the house and barking at squirrels outside. And those are fun and
important things to do.

Hi, it’s Toby. A few days ago I got my nails cut. I do not
like that. Except when I get a biscuit after I am done. At least I did not get
a bath. Right now I am nice and stinky, just how I like to be. I hope I get to
stay that way for the rest of the year.
Hello, it’s Turtle. I think that someone should give that stinky dog a bath. I wash myself every day. He should not be so stinky and dirty. I can’t believe that people would want to snuggle with such a dirty dog when they can pet a nice clean, soft cat like me. Would you rather pet a clean, soft cat or a stinky, dirty dog?

Hello, it’s Turtle. Today, Mommy took me to the vet I did not like driving in the car and pooped in the crate on the way there. I was very good at the vet, and every one said I was cute and wanted to pet me. I was very good when they looked at my eyes and my ears and my teeth. I was also very good when they gave me my shot. I don’t know why Toby makes such a fuss about getting shots. If you act like a good kitty, everyone likes you and wants to pet you.
Hi, it’s Toby. I’m glad that I did not have to go to the vet today. I do not like getting shots or having people look in my ears or teeth or eyes. Turtle had to get a bath when she got home. That was funny. She didn’t like it and shook a lot when she got out. I was also glad that Turtle had to get a bath and I didn’t.

Hi, it’s Toby. We have had 3 thunderstorms since last night. I do not like thunderstorms. And no one will let me jump into bed and snuggle with them until the storm is over. Maybe I will get on the couch and snuggle with your unicorn pillow pet.
Hello, it’s Turtle. I want to say that, if Toby gets to snuggle with the unicorn pillow pet, I should also get to snuggle with it. Also, I found the lid to a chapstick. It’s very fun to play with. Much more fun than puzzle pieces; they are not nearly as tasty. Not that I was tasting them or anything. I am a good cat. Maybe we should get 100 pillow pets and make a bed for me out of them. That would be so soft. I might even share it with you if you ask nicely. Do you think 100 pillow pets would be enough?

Hi, it’s Toby. Today it was very, very hot outside. I wanted
to be outside (I like being outside), but it was too hot. Inside it was cool,
so I asked to go inside. But after I was inside, I wanted to go back outside. I
wanted to be inside AND outside at the same time. Has that ever happened to
you? Maybe that is why people like camping.
Hello, it’s Turtle. Today I decided to try some new things. I tried to help with a puzzle, but got yelled at for being on top of the coffee table. I tried to plant some seeds, but got in trouble for getting dirt everywhere. I also tried riding on the treadmill with Poppy, but got put on the floor instead. I guess I will have to find some other things to do. Do you have any ideas?

Hello, it’s Turtle. I hope that you are feeling better. I wish that I could sleep in your room and pounce on your feet all night long. Or play with your legos while you sleep. I promise that I would not run off and hide all of them. Toby has been nice and let me eat some of his food to let me know that he cares that I am sad about you being sick. Sometimes being sad makes me eat a lot. But Toby also chases me around so that I do not get too fat from eating all the food.
Hi, it’s Toby. I’m glad that you brushed me this week after
you were feeling better. It felt so good to get rid of all my itchy fur. I hope
that your throat and ear keep feeling better. I will give you some of my dog
food or toys if you want (they make Turtle feel better when I share with her).

Hello, it’s Turtle. The sheets on your bed have been changed
now, and your bedspread washed. I went in and tried out the bed for you. It
smells nice and is very comfy. I also took a lego out of your room and ran off
with it. I left it in the house somewhere for you to find.
Hi, it’s Toby. I do not think it’s fair that Turtle gets to be on your bed and I am stuck on the floor. I want to try out the new sheets too. Maybe when you are back you can let me sleep on the bed with you and the stuffed animals.

Hello, it’s Turtle. It was very hot today, so I hung out in
the basement where it was nice and cool. I also found some neat things to play
with down there. There was some string and a cool piece of paper and fuzz. It
was awesome. And Toby did not eat any of my toys.
Hi, it’s Toby. Today for dinner Poppy picked some squash.
The goats got all the end pieces. All I got was dog food. There was not even a
chewie for me. Turtle didn’t bring anything edible up from the basement either.
When you get back, you should give me a chewie or a dog biscuit.

Hi, it’s Toby. I had a fun time camping! Next time, I think that you should let me sleep in your bed. Or maybe you could bring me a tent to sleep in. Or you could take me fishing with you. I bet I would be very good at fishing. I might sing and howl at the fish to get them to come out.
Hello, it’s Turtle. I am sad that no one took me camping or fishing. I bet that cats (like me) are very good at fishing. I could catch all the fish in the pond. But I do not like to get wet, so that might be a problem. Maybe I will not like fishing. I could just play with the worms. That might be a lot of fun. I think I would like that. Maybe you could find me some.
